5 Safe Alternatives to Fireworks

Shantie Toolsie  | July 1, 2019

With the 4th of July coming up, firework stands, and American flags can be found everywhere. Though fireworks are a summer tradition, lots of parents might be concerned with the safety of things like sparklers, poppers and firework fountains. Fear not, there are plenty of safe ways for kids to celebrate! Here are 5 fun, flameless alternatives to fireworks.

1. Glow Sticks

Kids love these brightly colored neon accessories! Glow sticks are not only cheap, they look cool in the dark and they help to keep kids safe and visible. Try glow stick jewelry for the ultimate 4th of July fashion accessory. Pro tip: prolong the life of glow sticks by putting them in the freezer.

2. Colored Bubbles

Pick up some red and blue bubbles to celebrate before it gets too dark outside. Kids love to blow bubbles and these washable and non-toxic colored bubbles are a great way for them to have fun. You can even up your game and buy a bubble machine for automatic bubble streams that last all evening.

3. Pinatas

Pinatas aren’t just for birthdays! Pick up a patriotic pinata and stuff it with candy for the 4th. It’s a lot less loud than fireworks and they’ll get candy out of the deal! You can also make mini pinatas with hollowed eggs and paper confetti.

4. Popping Slime

Kids love messy things! Make some homemade firecracker slime. It uses Pop Rocks candy to create fizzy, popping noises and great colors. (Note that the slime is not edible, so buy extra Pop Rocks just for eating!)

5. DIY Safe Firecrackers

Check out some great DIY party poppers and flameless firecrackers from Buzzfeed. Most of these crafts are easy to make and use simple, household materials like food containers, straws, balloons and food color.

With just a little outside-the-box thinking and some help from the internet, there are many ways to have blast this Fourth of July. No matter how you decide to celebrate, don’t forget to stay hydrated, wear sunscreen, and be safe!
