Back to School Checklist

Though kids don’t want to hear it, it’s that time of year again! It’s back to school, and as the school supplies start to flood store shelves, kids probably aren’t the only ones stressing about a new school year. Here’s a handy back to school checklist so everyone in your family can start the year off right.

1. Early Bedtime

One of the hardest post-summer adjustments for kids is going to bed and getting up early again. Set a bedtime schedule a few weeks before school starts to get them back into a healthy sleep schedule. In addition, get them used to waking up at a certain time so they won’t be running late those first few days of school.

2. Doctor Check-Up

All parents know that the school year is also cold and flu season. Ensure your child is up to date on all his or her shots before they go back. If they haven’t had their yearly check-up, this would be a good time before everyone gets too busy. If your child has health concerns, including allergies or asthma, this is also a good time to prepare them for their days away from home by stocking up on emergency essentials like EpiPens and inhalers.

3. Set Up After School Care

Don’t wait until the week school starts to figure out where they’ll go or who will pick them up after school. Have a back-to-school plan that includes who drops them off and who picks them up every day. After school care is essential for parents who work full-time, so take the stress off yourself by making plans now.

4. Shop for Supplies

School supply lists are actually fun for kids, and they love to pick out new folders, notebooks, art supplies and other academic essentials. Make supply shopping fun by letting them help. You might also set up an area in the house to be a homework space to encourage good homework habits right off the bat.

5. Encourage Them!

The most important thing you can do as a parent is make sure that back to school time isn’t the worst thing in the world. Encourage them to make a positive start by helping them get excited about a new school year. Throw a back to school bash, reward them for milestones, and help them find the fun things to love about school.

With a little bit of preparation and a positive attitude, everyone can conquer the back-to-school blues and get the year started off right. Our job at Rock Creek is to ensure you and your children make a smooth transition into the next academic year, and we are here to help. Until then, enjoy the rest of your summer break!
