Choosing The Right Book


The new school year is off to a great start at Rock Creek School. As our students learn and grow we love to remind our Superior families how important it is for their students to continue to read while they are at home. Reading is not only an essential school (and life!) skill, but it can be a great source of entertainment, creativity, and new ideas for our students.

We understand that at times a student can struggle to pick the right book. Our team of professional educators has gathered some of our favorite tips for picking the right book.

  1. Find a book that interests your student. If your child is excited about a topic, it will be a lot easier to get them to read about it. Unless a book is specifically assigned for a class, letting the child pick a book, or finding a book that interests your child is a great solution. Take your student to the library or a bookstore and help them find books about topics they are interested in or curious about.
  2. Review the vocabulary of the book. Take a look at the first few pages of some chapters of the book and make sure that vocabulary words are appropriate for your student’s reading level. There should be no more than five words on a page that your student can’t understand.
  1. Look At The Visuals. Depending on your student’s age and ability, visuals can support them during their reading. Flip through the book to ensure that there is a proper visual to word ratio for your student. Slowly your student can work towards less and less pictures as they continue to challenge themselves and grow.
  1. How Long Is The Book? Analyze the length of the book to make sure that it is appropriate for your student. How long will your student be interested in the book? Is there a deadline for school? Answering these questions and comparing their previous completed reads will keep your child motivated to read.
  1. Check Your Child’s Comprehension. Throughout the book, check in with your student to verify that they are able to understand what they are reading. If they read it aloud, are they able to read it smoothly? Are they able to summarize or describe to you in their own words what they just read?
