Great Summer Reading Books in 2019

You already know practicing reading is essential for kids in the summer, but with so many books out there, how do you choose what to read? From adventure and fantasy to educational and silly, here are a few popular kids’ books for 2019.

1. Superheros Are Everywhere, Kamala Harris

Superheros are always on trend, but this book takes a little bit of a different approach and shows kids how anyone can be a hero in their own community. Written by Senator Kamala Harris, this book highlights teachers, activists, parents and the readers themselves as people who can make a difference.

2. Diary of an Awesome Friendly Kid, Jeff Kinney

One of the most popular series for grades 3-7 is the Diary of a Wimpy Kid series. If your kids have gotten into these books, they might be interested in this latest installment from Jeff Kinney that spins off the original series. Silly, lighthearted and relatable for kids, these books make for great and fun summer reads they’ll actually be excited about.

3. Ada Twist, Scientist, Andrea Beaty

This book encourages girls to get interested in science with its fun main character, Ada Twist. Young readers join Ada on her adventure to use chemistry and science to solve the mystery of the smelly house. This book is part of a series of books about intelligent, STEM-based characters. Check out the others including Iggy Peck, Architect and Rosie Revere, Engineer.

4. The Dog Man Series, Dave Pilkey

From the creator of Captain Underpants, the Dog Man books take readers on the adventures of this half-man, half-dog police officer. Fun, easy to read, and engaging, your kids are sure to get a kick out of this series. There are currently three books, and the series is for ages 6-8.

5. The Magic Treehouse Series, Mary Pope Osborne

Magic Treehouse has been around for a while, but it remains one of the most popular book series for ages 6-10. Part fantasy and part adventure, kids will be swept away on the time-traveling journies of main characters Jack and Annie. There are currently 28 Magic Treehouse books, so if your kids enjoy them, they will have plenty to keep them busy all summer!

Whether you challenge your kids to read on their own or if you read aloud to them, they’re sure to benefit from these great stories. Check out your local library or bookstore for more trending books for kids. With so many new topics and characters, it will be hard for kids to not like reading once they find something that interests them! Happy reading!
