Why Summer Reading is Important

For kids, summer break is one of the most exciting times of the year! Warm days filled with fun and no school is great for kids, but a lot of parents might be wondering if their children will lose valuable education during those months away from the classroom. Sure, we want our kids to have a fun-filled summer and take a break from the hard work, but how do you keep their minds busy so they’re not just watching TV or playing video games every day?

The answer is reading. Summer reading for kids is essential for keeping their minds keen and helping them continue to discover and learn. Kids who keep reading over the summer have shown improved literacy skills, a better grip of language, and the ability to keep up with the next year’s curriculum better than kids that don’t read. Even just 30 minutes a day has been shown to make a huge difference.

Summer reading doesn’t have to be boring, however. Let them pick out fun chapter books that interest them, or educational books with lots of pictures or interactive components. Set goals and rewards for achievements, or join a summer reading program so they can share their reading with other kids their age.

We are launching our own Summer Slide Reading Program this year to promote fun and engaging summer literacy. The program runs from June to July and is Monday through Thursday from 9am to 1pm. Kids will enjoy snacks, yoga, games and, of course, valuable reading time in small groups. Sign up today to ensure they’ll stay on track this summer.

No matter how you chose to engage your kids before the next school year, don’t let them fall behind! There are plenty of ways to get your kids into reading and learning. For some other fun ideas, check out our blog post on 7 Ways to Get Your Kids to Read This Summer.
